Olympic Kiln Features

Olympic electronic kilns ship with Bartlett controllers.  Glass fusing kilns (GF models) come with the RTC1000 controller.  All other electronic kilns ship with either the V6-CF controller and or the Bartlet 3K Controller.  (In some cases you can substitute between the RTC1000 and the V6-CF upon request when ordering.)  You can read more about the Bartlett controllers, download manuals, etc, at
http://www.bartinst.com/kiln.html

Glass Kilns. Olympic's glass fusing kilns have both lid and body elements. Elements in the firing chamber are used to evenly heat the glass piece and the lid element is used when fusing temperature is reached. Glass fusing kilns have a maximum temperature range of 1700° F and generally are not as deep as pottery kilns because most glasswork is done on one layer of shelving.

Gas Kilns.
Comparing gas to electric kilns is similar to comparing sports cars to sedans. Both will get you where you need to go but the ride is definitely different. Gas kilns are the sports car of kilns. They fire to high temperatures (high powered), cone 10/2350°F and provide the potter the ability to do techniques with glaze that cannot be duplicated in an electric kiln such as reduction. Olympic makes updraft gas kilns (raku and torchbearer kilns) and downdraft gas kilns. Updraft gas kilns introduce the heat at the bottom and exhausts at the top. These kilns do not require a chimney to induce a draft. The downdraft kilns are a more complex system in that their exhaust and intake is at the bottom. These kilns require a chimney or stack to induce enough draft to pull in fresh air for combustion. The Olympic Torchbearer kilns are top loading, stackable gas kilns. These kilns are portable and rings can be added for additional depth without decreasing temperature range.

Cone 10 kilns (H models).  Increasing the wall insulation with thicker brick rather than with soft insulation, retains the strength and rigidity of the standard Olympic Kiln, and brick replacement and maintenance is extremely easy.  Olympic's proven electrical box design with heat shields and top and bottom perforations to keep the electric components cool, has even been improved upon on the cone 10 kilns.  The electrical boxes are enlarged by 20% to give the same air flow cross section as the 28" kiln.  The cone 10 kilns look much like the regular kilns, and their interior dimensions are the same as the corresponding standard kiln, however the outside dimensions of all but the 28" kiln are one inch larger.  Olympic 23" and 28" cone 10 kilns have balanced heating elements to ensure even heating of the firing chamber under all firing conditions.  In many cases, the kilns also have higher power available to get to Cone 10.

Oval KilnsThe Olympic oval kiln was created to fill many needs.  First to provide a kiln for large ceramic pieces and big commercial loads while requiring little more floor space than the cylindrical kiln.  Second to offer easy loading and energy efficiency.  The ovals have heavy duty construction to go with their large size.  The bottom slab of all oval kilns is built into the bottom ring and reinforced with a galvanized metal plate for support.  All oval kilns are constructed of 3" brick for added insulation and strength.  Balanced heating elements insure an even distribution of heat within the kiln regardless of the load being fired.  The lid is attached to the kiln with an oversized hinge and locking lid brace combination and secured to hidden reinforcing plates for added durability.  The lid also has a hole in the center for venting.  Ring configuration allows easy disassembly for size change and movement, and each ring has two handles for easy lifting.  Olympic's unique ring lock prevents shifting of the kiln rings when in use.

Electronic Controllers
Electronic Controllers are the ultimate in control.  They do it all.  They measure the temperature in the kiln, control how fast or slow the kiln fires, and tells the kiln when to turn off.  They offer accuracy and repeatability in your firings.  They can be used to fire ceramics, glass, PMC and essentially any other kiln process.

    • Electronic controllers have two modes of operation; Cone Fire and Ramp/Hold.
In Cone Fire mode, you tell the kiln what Cone you want to fire to, whether you want to fire fast, medium, or slow, and the controller does the rest.
In Ramp/Hold mode, you program in specific firing sequences of ramping the temperature up (or down) at specific rates, or holding temperature for specific durations, and the controller does the rest.  These program sequences can be stored in the controller and easily retrieved for subsequent firings.

All electronic controllers perform Ramp/Hold firing.  Controllers designed for ceramic kilns also perform Cone Fire.  Electronic controllers include thermocouples which are placed in the kiln to read the temperature and feed it back to the controller.  The controller will display the current temperature inside the kiln.  Most large kilns are sold with electronic controllers, but many small kilns are not (the reason being cost).

It is less expensive to purchase an electronic controller pre-installed on a kiln, but external electronic controllers can be added separately afterward.  Sometimes this is done to upgrade an existing kiln, or some people have multiple kilns and may purchase a single external controller with the intention of moving it between their kilns.

Electronic controllers are quickly becoming the most common kiln controller sold.  They are especially important for glass, and extremely handy and convenient for ceramics.

There are two main types of electronic controllers; 3-Key controllers and 12-Key (Full) controllers.  Functionally, they are very similar, having a very similar feature set.  However the 12-Key controller will often have some additional nice-to-have features, or will provide quicker access to certain functions direct form the keypad.  Also, programming the controller can be more convenient, as you can directly type in numbers as opposed to using the up/down arrow keys.

      Olympic Kiln Warranty

      LIMITED KILN WARRANTY

Haugen Manufacturing, Incorporated guarantees to the original purchaser that any defects in OLYMPIC KILNS which become apparent within two years (one year for the Dawson Kiln Sitter and safety timer which is covered by warranty from W. P. Dawson, Inc. and kilns rated at cone 10) will be remedied as specified below.

Our warranty, of course, does not cover any kiln damaged or altered by you or others after it leaves our factory. Our warranty does not cover damage due to reduction or salt firing, over-firing, exceeding the maximum cone or temperature ratings, improper installation, use of electrical voltages different than those specified, or firing material other than ceramics.

If a defect of manufacturer becomes apparent, and your retailer does not resolve it to your satisfaction, we will in the following manner: Within (6;) days of the first indication of a defect, tell us in writing of defect, and the date, place and proof of the your purchase. We will contact you to determine what parts seem to warrant repair and to instruct you as to shipment of the kiln parts. You will dismantle, package, and ship the parts we request (and no others), to us at your cost, freight prepaid. If the kiln has a defect of manufacture we will repair, replace or refund as is appropriate, within (30) days. We will ship to you at our cost in your package, for you to reinstall at your cost. If the parts shipped by you to us are in need of repair or replacement for something which is not covered by this warranty, we will not perform the work until you have authorized the work and made arrangements for payment. If substantially an entire kiln is returned for repair under warranty, you will prepay the cost of packaging and shipping both to and from the factory.

We shall in no event be liable for injuries to persons or property or for incidental, contingent, special or consequential damages arising from the use of our products. Some states do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, so the above limitation or exclusion may not apply to you.
